Michael D. Gibson - Poetry
Michael Douglas Gibson was born in
Liverpool, England, in February 1940. He
attended the Roman Catholic St.Edwards
College in Liverpool from where he won a
scholarship, the Elton Exhibition, to read
English at Balliol, Oxford, in 1959.
Whilst still at St.Edwards, he got his first
writing job, mainly reviews, for a national jazz
magazine. Poetry became his main writing
whilst at Oxford.
Leaving Oxford in 1962 Michael took various
teaching posts up and down the country,
whilst continuing his own writing work, before
finally settling in Keswick, in the Lake
District, in 1976 with his wife Angela and two
sons, Dominic and John. Here he spent most
of his time writing but also working for the
Century Theatre.
Aged just 52, Michael died from throat
cancer in Keswick in 1992.
What remains as his legacy is a vast amount
of poetry and prose, including many French
and Russian translations from some 30 or
more years of intense creativity and
production.
A first collection of poems was published by
his son John in 2003 primarily to enable
family and friends to appreciate Michael's
work. The second collection followed in 2006.
This website has been set up to enable
others of like-minded interest to enjoy the
work too.
